Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people.
The Rome Chapter of the NAACP is partnering with the City of Rome, and several local organizations, for this 3-day event to educate our community on the importance of diversity and inclusion

Community Organizations will be on hand to answer questions about available services.

Brownskin Band based out of Syracuse, NY, was formed in 2007. The band’s name comes from the founder, Nathaniel Brown, combining his last name with his instrument of choice, the drums more affectionately known as the “skins”. He has combined a cohesive group of talented musicians. The band has won two SAMMY Awards for best R&B CD in Central New York. Brownskin Band is up and running and are pursuing recording the bands’s third original recording and using it as a means to continue to spread their infectious positive energy throughout the world.

Fri 5:30pm-8pm Opening Ceremony & Live Music With The “Brownskin Band”. Food trucks for purchase.  Concert goers are welcome to bring blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy the music.

    • Local autobiographer Barbara Rhodes reading excerpts from “In Search of a Family”

 

  • Hamilton College Professor Rodríguez-Plate “Some forgotten heroes of the abolition of slavery along the Erie Canal”
  • Professor will share some overlooked stories of important abolitionists along the Erie Canal. In the 19th century, the Erie Canal transported workers, newspapers, tourists, and grain, but also served as one leg of the Underground Railroad. Focusing on two key people at the time (the Reverend Jermain Loguen and Austin Steward) this presentation brings to light some of the significance of the Erie Canal in the fight to end slavery.
