Homegrown holiday feature film, The Christmas Letter, to be screened in a special one-day-only event at historic Rome Capitol Theatre

The Rome Capitol Theatre is excited to present a special screening of the fun-filled homegrown holiday feature film, The Christmas Letter, Saturday, November 30th, with showings at 2:30 PM and 7:00 PM. This special screening will give local audiences a chance to experience the excitement of seeing the Utica-Rome/Mohawk Valley area, as well as many area residents who landed roles in the film, featured on the big screen.

The Christmas Letter follows an unemployed copywriter with an inferiority complex — made worse annually by the over-the-top Christmas letter he receives from his wealthy overseas pal. Tired of always being on the receiving end of his friend’s narcissistic newsletter, he gambles everything to give his family a Christmas-letter worthy lifestyle he can gush about in his own letter. His jealousy-fueled attempts to upstage his friend backfire, however, and take him and his family on a string of misadventures that are anything but brag-worthy.

Starring Angus Benfield (The Keeper), The Christmas Letter features comedy icons Chevy Chase, Randy Quaid, and Brian Doyle-Murray of National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation fame, and marks the feature directorial debut of Tori Hunter. Written by Ilion native, Michael Cunningham, the story features as its backdrop local landmarks such as Utica City Hall, Woods Valley Ski area in Westernville, Gerber’s Tavern, The Stanley Theatre, Griffiss International Airport, and Clinton’s Stone Presbyterian Church, to name a few.

“I always wanted to bring something back home.” Cunningham said. “I loved growing up here and feel like the area has so much to offer filmmakers in not only its beautiful landscapes and architecture, but mostly its wonderful people who opened up their hearts, homes, and businesses to us.”
